Jia Zhixing is an artist, director, and art director for theater and film. He graduated from the College of Arts at Xiamen University with a master’s degree. In 2011 and 2017, he participated in the MAAS art residence in the Netherlands, and in 2024, he was selected for the 8th John Moores Painting Prize (China). He currently lives and works in Beijing.
The artist’s previous works mainly focused on photography and performance art. In recent years, his creations have shifted towards novels and paintings, using family images, oral history, local records, and local literature as entry points to explore the “deviation” in art creation. With insight on the tension and deconstruction with mainstream narratives, he imbues his works with unique uncertainty and humor, showcasing multidimensional reflections on memory, history, and cultural contexts. In addition, the artist continuously explores practices and innovative expressions in the field of theater and film, creating over twenty film and theater productions. His directorial works include “Grandpa with Long Hair” and “Kelp, Kelp,” among others.
