Work in Progress documents Casper Braat’s carving of a cubic meter of marble into a cubic centimeter by hand over 20 days.
The film function as both an investigation into the time and energy that goes into the handicraft of marble carving, but also the absurdity of investing extreme effort in creating a cubic centimeter prompts viewers to question the purpose and value of such work.
The 100-hour duration of the film emphasizes the prolonged and deliberate nature of the process. It highlights the significant amount of time required to achieve what might seem like a scale change. This focus on time draws attention to the often-overlooked labor and patience involved in stone artwork production, contrasting sharply with the fast-paced consumption habits of modern society. This work is meant to shine a light on a single laborious process and its relation to the many laborers who are behind most of the goods and modern conveniences we may take for granted today.
The film ends with a perfect cubic cm and 2750kg of marble detritus.
