Following “Rolling Snowball 14” exhibition in 2022 which echoed the voices of different individuals under the theme of “Ni Hao/How are you?”, this year’s “Rolling Snowball17” will continue the discussion, based on our living environment, of how our “landscapes” are constructed and reconstructed. Unlike conventional presentations of natural scenery, the landscapes featured here specifically refer to the interactions among the complex natural processes, human activities and social systems, which form a comprehensive entity with multiple layers of meaning.

Amid the rapid changes in various environments currently, individuals are caught in routine cycles, continuously consumed and regenerated. Emerging from repeated individual experiences, the landscapes of daily life are the result of social development and cultural tradition. The focus of this exhibition is the absorption pathways, digestion systems, and ongoing reconstruction of these landscapes. If we compare the current landscape to a fast-paced journey of intense construction, then time and people are the stable elements in continuous movement and change, while memory constructs a constantly operating super construction site in depths to help us reboot the framework and race towards our destination.

“Under construction” is a both a state and a progress. Though a massive construction site, it is also a landscape within a landscape. Through the practice and research of the participating artists, the exhibition presents different processes and states of landscapes under construction, especially the unique narrations and reflections on issues such as individual digestion, restructuring of relationships, and social structures that are triggered by the state of being “under construction”. The evolving states of the super-sites—to be constructed, can be constructed, and are frequently reconstructed—will be recorded, observed, tracked, and even overturned one by one.

The exhibition is jointly presented by the Chinese European Art Center, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Guangzhou, and the Xiamen Powerlong Art Center.
